Tom has served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors since 1994, succeeding his father and grandfather in such roles dating to the company’s founding in 1892. Today, Crowley is a global, $2.5 billion-a-year marine solutions, energy, and logistics services company for the commercial and government sectors.

Under Tom’s leadership, the U.S.-based company has advanced its industry-leading assets and solutions into areas of opportunity such as commercial and government supply chain services, fuels transportation and distribution, ship management, naval architecture and engineering, project management and energy services. Recent advances provide total value chain solutions in new energy, such as offshore wind, and technology. Amid these strategies, Tom has set the company’s ambition to be the most sustainable and innovative maritime and logistics solutions provider in the Americas by 2025.

Strategically, Tom has focused on building the company relative to its expertise on water, while leveraging other asset-light and non-asset areas of expertise in supply chain services to develop a portfolio of businesses that offer both strong integration and diversification of risk.

In recent years, for example, he has guided the company through the construction and operation of the first-of-their-kind combination container/roll-on roll-off (ConRo) ships powered by LNG, and usage of other cleaner, alternative fuels and services. In another example of the company’s diversification and innovation, Crowley is leveraging the abundance of natural gas in the U.S. to distribute LNG and related engineering services. The company has operated assets that also leverage mariner engineering, project management and various solutions that support value chains. The company completed the largest, most technically demanding marine salvage project in history – the refloating and removal of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia.

A staunch supporter of the American maritime industry, Tom has invested billions of dollars during his tenure in the construction of American-built tugboats, heavy-lift flat-deck barges, articulated tug-barges (ATBs), tankers and the LNG-powered ConRo ships in the U.S.-Puerto Rico trade, utilizing best-available technology with a focus on safety, sustainability, performance and efficiency. And the company’s growth plans call for further investment in a variety of new vessels over the next several years, including use of clean energy sources and technology such as all-electric tugboats.

Recognizing the importance of having knowledgeable, skilled and safe employees, Tom has dedicated a significant amount of his attention to employee learning, management training and other initiatives to build a nimble, collaborative and high-performance culture. He has placed safety at the center of everything the company does, and every employee has authority to work to ensure safety.

Tom holds a business finance degree from the University of Washington. Away from work, he lends his time and expertise to various organizations. He is on the board of directors of the World Shipping Council, an advisory board member at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business, and a longstanding member of the Young Presidents Organization.
